5 IT Skills Commerce Students Should Learn in 2026

IT · 5 min read · Updated 2026

A commerce or accounting degree teaches you how numbers work. It rarely teaches you the software that moves those numbers around in an actual company. That gap is exactly what hiring managers notice first — and it's easy to close.

1. Advanced Excel

Not formulas you memorize for an exam — pivot tables, lookups, and dashboards you can build under a real deadline. This is still the single most requested skill in finance and commerce job postings.

2. One accounting software (QuickBooks, Zoho Books, or Xero)

Pick one and go deep rather than skimming three. Employers want to see you can actually operate the tool their company already runs on.

3. Basic web literacy (HTML/CSS fundamentals)

You don't need to become a developer. Understanding how a website or web form is structured makes you far more useful in any role that touches e‑commerce, invoicing portals, or company websites.

4. Data basics with Python or Power Query

Even a light introduction to Python or Power Query changes how you handle large datasets — cleaning, merging, and summarising data that would otherwise eat hours in Excel.

5. Cyber security awareness

Finance departments are a common target for phishing and invoice fraud. Understanding the basics of how these attacks work protects both you and your employer.
