A Beginner's Guide to Filing Income Tax Returns in Pakistan

Tax · 6 min read · Updated 2026

Filing an income tax return for the first time can feel intimidating — mostly because nobody walks you through it step by step. Here is the plain‑language version, whether you're salaried, self‑employed, or freelancing.

1. Check if you actually need to file

In Pakistan, filing requirements depend on your income level, employment type, and whether you want to appear on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL). Being on the ATL reduces withholding tax on banking transactions, property transfers and vehicle registration — which is why many people file even when their income is modest.

2. Register with FBR (if you haven't already)

Registration happens through the IRIS portal, where you create a profile using your CNIC. Salaried employees usually already have an NTN linked to their CNIC; freelancers and business owners may need to register a new profile.

3. Gather your documents

4. File the return and wealth statement

Salaried individuals fill in income details, tax already deducted, and any tax credits they qualify for. A wealth statement showing assets and liabilities is required alongside the return for most filers — this is the step where beginners make the most errors.

5. Common mistakes to avoid

Where RPA's Tax course helps

Our Income Tax Return Filing course walks students through a real IRIS filing from start to finish in a live class, using practice profiles so you make your mistakes there — not on your actual return.
